New Zealand Hiking Tour
Hike Milford or HollyfordTrack and the Best of the South Island
Imagine tranquil coastline, subtropical rainforest, and huge glaciated mountains rearing out of the sea--welcome to New Zealand! In this venerable paradise, blend magnificent scenery and remote locations with world-class activities. Hike along deserted golden beaches and through ancient rain forests. Trek hut-to-hut along the world-famous Milford Track or the less strenuous and quieter Hollyford. Round out each day with Kiwi hospitality and local cuisine and you have the makings of the trip of a lifetime!
Days 1-3 Temple Basin-Punakaiki. Begin with a gentle walk to views of the Southern Alps. Then head to the gorgeous, seaside village of Punakaiki for a hike through unbelievably lush rainforest. Visit Pancake Rocks and Blowholes and explore local art galleries before hiking to the "Doughboy" on the deserted west coast.
Days 4-6 Franz Joseph Glacier-Mount Aspiring-Queenstown. Hike to the Tartare Tunnels to spot glowworms. Then hike to the face of Franz Joseph Glacier, an enormous river of ice that snakes through rainforest. Or take an optional heli-hike on the Franz Joseph Glacier, using crampons and ice axes. Next take a stunning hike up the Matukituki Valley in the heart of Mt. Aspiring National Park. This is one of the best hikes on the South Island, complete with tumbling rivers, towering snowfields, and huge mountain peaks straight from the set of The Lord of the Rings! A free day in Queenstown can be filled with all sorts of active options.
Days 7-11 Milford or Hollyford Track-Queenstown. Enjoy four days of peace, quiet, exercise, good food, and unbelievable scenery as you walk 33 miles from Lake Te Anau to the extraordinary Milford Sound with only a daypack. Enjoy an early morning boat ride to explore the length of Milford Sound. Or opt for the Hollyford Track, a popular local's secret for decades.
Days 12-14 Mount Cook-Christchurch. See gold mining relics as we hike the Sam Summers Track and finish with a visit to a local winery. Move on to Mount Cook for a challenging hike up the main ridge to stunning views of Mueller Glacier and the peaks of the Main Divide. Enjoy a traditional kiwi roast dinner on the final evening.
