U-shaped boats are bulkier, harder to handle deflated or inflated, and they have no performance characteristics without a motor. SOAR's compact size and streamlined design gives it excellent performance for paddling, rowing or using a small gas or electric outboard motor.

Perhaps the most unusual tender usage to date has been accompanying the Viracocha Reed Ship bringing supplies to the ship, serving as the film platform, and to while away some of the boredom of an ocean crossing, crew members used their SOAR as a to play "King of the Raft"!
