Backpacks, shoes, clothes, bikes, paddles, climbing gear, and more. Adventure racing requires a lot of gear, and for the beginner, it might seem overwhelming. There is also a lot of talk about some gear being better than others. I will attempt to dispell some of the myths and help the beginner get over gear-phobia.

“Don't let your fear of gear keep you from racing.”

   The most common obstacle to getting the "right" gear is money. That is of course if you know what the "right" gear is. You may have seen the sample equipment list, which gives you an idea of the types of things you will need. But you want to know what brands and models to get, don't you?

   In the following pages I have provided some tips that will help you get around some of these issues with gear. There is so much gear to talk about, I will have to do a multi-part series. The first part is about Personal Mandatory Equipment.
