WE NEED A WEBMASTER TO UPDATE THESE PAGES

March 14, 2000-- Please join me for an exciting event March 14 at Glen Canyon Dam for the "Colorado River Restoration Celebration and Rendezvous."

We will celebrate the new century and a new look at our rivers and watersheds, joining the other rallies around the world on the Third Annual International Day of Action Against Dams and For Rivers, Water, and Life.

Former Poet Laureate Robert Hass will join us for what he calls this "Century of River Restoration." We come together at Glen to correct the most egregious errors of the last century and bring joy back to rivers -- and heed Isaiah who, 2700 years ago, said "thou hast multiplied the nation and not increased the joy." Please remember Edith Warner¹s genius in the phrase "time and the river flowing," who knew how much the river has suffered when given only time and no flow, when the Sistine Chapel is flooded so that jet skiers can speed closer to the ceiling.

The Glen Canyon Action Network is cooperating with International Rivers Network, the Center for Biological Diversity, Colorado Plateau River Guides, Earth Island Institute, Friends of the Earth, Friends of the River, and many other groups who in turn have been reawakened by Rich Ingebretsen's Glen Canyon Institute. See our website at www.drainit.org for a complete list of organizations sponsoring this historic rally at Glen Canyon Dam.

So join many of my friends who have been so important to these efforts:

Since you'll be travelling from other places, I invite you to come through Flagstaff the day before the rally--Monday, March 13--for a "Glen Canyon Teach-In" on the campus of Northern Arizona University. All afternoon we will enjoy hearing you and others reveal the joyful proposal to decommission Glen Canyon Dam at sessions at the NAU Student Union.

That evening will be show time--images of the Glen Canyon That Was; Katie Lee¹s moving songs about the river and about the characters who have given it a bad time; and my own few words explaining my biases about the campaign, the river, and perhaps something relevant, such as the way rivers feel when some people think they are only there to be dammed.

Mikhail Davis, my Earth Island staff and manager, usually notes that what I write is long. I am trying hard to be shorter when I talk. At 87.6 years, I am indeed two inches shorter in height for sure.

This celebration will give the restoration era the big break it needs, and bring a lot of joy to the 1600 miles of canyons and side canyons that are magnificent gestures of the Earth (Ansel Adams¹s phrase), unmatched on Earth or anywhere else. They are waiting eagerly to be born again. I know, I asked them all.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

David R. Brower, Berkeley, CA

HOW TO GET THERE: To reach Flagstaff, from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, where a daily shuttle bus makes inexpensive trips to downtown Flagstaff for $22 each way (Find the shuttle schedule on the web at www.navahopitours.com). Commuter air service connections to Flagstaff and Page are available but pricey. NAU's Cline Library Assembly Hall is south of downtown Flagstaff and can be accessed easily from Milton Street (US Hwy 89).

Glen Canyon Dam is about two hours' drive north of Flagstaff on US Hwy. 89, just past Page, Arizona. Glen Canyon Action Network will work to assist those needing transportation from Flagstaff on the day of the rally.

From Salt Lake City, take I-15 south to I-70 east, then south on US Hwy 89 through Panguitch and Kanab to the dam.

From Moab, travel south on US Hwy 191 just past Bluff, then turn off on US Hwy 193 through Mexican Hat. From Kayenta, turn west on US Hwy 160. Just past Black Mesa turn north onto AZ Hwy 98 to Page.

Monday, March 13, 12:00 - 5:00 pm -- Teach-in, Northern Arizona University. Sponsored by GCAN and Free the Planet NAU Chapter. Presenters so far will include: Ken Sleight, Glen Canyon river-runner/explorer, long-time river activist Dave Wegner, former head of Glen Canyon Environmental Studies division of the Bureau of Reclamation Robert Lippman, NAU faculty, attorney and longtime campaigner for a restored Glen Canyon David Orr, Field Director for Glen Canyon Action Network Footage of the Earth First Crack in the Dam Rally, 1981, and much more!

Monday, March 13, 7:00 - 9:00 pm -- Concert and rally, Cline Library Auditorium, Northern Arizona University featuring: David Brower, Martin Litton, Katie Lee, Ken Sleight, Bill Oliver (not yet confirmed,) and others.

Tuesday, March 14, 12:00 - 2:00 -- Restoration rally and rendezvous, Glen Canyon Dam. For a full list of those involved check www.drainit.org.

(Planned, but not yet confirmed): Tuesday, March 14, 5:00 pm -- Post Rally celebration and campout at Lee's Ferry. Hang out with many of the legends of the Colorado Plateau, and other legends in the making, as we continue to celebrate the dawn of the Century of River Restoration.

We are hoping as many folks that plan to attend the Restoration Rally and Rendezvous will be able to attend the festivities the evening before. For planning purposes, we would like to hear from those folks who plan to attend any or all of these events, and how many people may be coming with them.

For those folks staying in Flagstaff, we hope to line-up some locals who would be willing to offer accommodations. Short of that, we will provide a list of inexpensive motels.

Lastly, anyone interested in helping with the event(s) please email GCAN at info@drainit.org. This event is coming together through the dedication of many volunteers, but we could very much use more help. Again, keep checking www.drainit.org for the most up-to-date information on the Day of Action. Save the Grand Canyon, Restore Glen Canyon, Drain "Lake" Powell Now!

Sincerely,

Your Friends of the Glen at GCAN
