11 Things You Should Bring on a River Trip

Selway

Selway River, IDThe Selway River canyon is one of the last pieces of unspoiled America . . .

It presents one of the greatest wilderness river experiences available. It has the perfect blend of challenging whitewater, exquisite scenery, superb fishing, and wonderful campsites. And, with only one group allowed to launch per day, we are allowed the rare and privileged feeling of having this place all to ourselves.

The river cuts a narrow canyon through the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area in central Idaho and was one of the original rivers protected under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in 1968. Our five-day whitewater rafting trips cover 47 miles of river and include a layover day in the heart of the canyon. The layover allows us time to fish, hike, explore and soak in the unique solitude of this spectacular place.

Starting in 2011, our Selway trips will begin and end in Missoula Montana.

"I thought that your guides were tremendous. I found your guides much friendlier than on some other trips, which really added to our interaction."
Lillian Good

"It was great to learn that you donate your
profits to good causes."

ARTA GUIDE
EMILY McGINTY

Emily McGintyEmily comes with the warning: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. Innocent young men and women, foolish enough to think they could keep up, have had their cars stranded, clothes shredded, ankles broken, and egos squashed. Her infinite enthusiasm and abundant energy have earned her quite a reputation and many nicknames, including SuperVixen, Spitfire, E-mac and one we can't print. They've also gotten her through four years of grueling academics at the University of Nevada and Humboldt State, a second-place finish in the Western Collegiate Mountain Bike Championships and a gig as a roller-skating waitress in a Sonic Drive-In commercial. Our advice: when she says: "Hey, I have an idea..." turn and run.

For Right Brained People:

As far as rivers in the Lower 48 are concerned, this is the ultimate. Take the rapids of the Tuolumne, the remoteness of the Illinois, the scenery of the Middle Fork Salmon, the hiking of the Yampa, the campsites of the Main Salmon, etc. etc. etc. and the Selway stands shoulder to shoulder with all of them. And the fishing and lack of other people is head and shoulders ABOVE all of them. We love this place so much we schedule an extra day right in the middle of our trips so that we can enjoy it even more; a layover day where we don’t travel downstream but rather spend two nights at the same camp and gorge ourselves on the cornucopia of Selway treats. The gung-ho take an epic, all-day hike to the Schissler Peak fire lookout and then return with stories of marmots and eagles and bears; the not-so-gung-ho take a nap and then listen. Everyone has a gin and tonic. Pretty amazing place. We are privileged to be one of only four outfitters licensed to offer trips here; and thankful.
