CBOC History

California whitewater rafting on the American River

In 1986 CBOC WHITE WATER'S founder, Dick Wright, and a group of his friends from the Southeast came out to California for 8 days for the purpose of canoeing a series of rivers in the state. One of them was the South Fork American River. They all loved it. Later in the week one of the party was injured and stayed at the Chili Bar put in while the others made their second decent from Chili Bar to Salmon Falls. That evening, around the dinner table at Casa Grande in Placerville, the injured fellow said "you know, there is a rafting company for sale on the South Fork" and someone else said "let's buy it". Over the next couple of months the idea grew until, in September, 1986, they bought the company and created Chili Bar Outdoor Center (CBOC WHITE WATER).

Their vision was to "provide a safe, fun and exciting whitewater experience to our Customers, using the best equipment in the industry, the most professional guides on the river, and dedicated, experienced management, all at a fair price". Over the years they have met, or exceeded, that vision statement.

In 2004, after 16 years of providing high quality whitewater rafting trips on the North, Middle, and South Forks of the American Rivers, Chili Bar Outdoor Center (CBOC Whitewater Adventures) decided to blend its operation with Mother Lode River Center, another premier outfitter here in Coloma.

This merging allows you not only to benefit from the great rafting trips, but also to benefit from the additional outdoor activities provided by Mother Lode River Center. These include high and low ropes courses, nature studies, wilderness medicine courses, Gold Rush history, nature hikes and many other interesting activities. As an added option we can mix and match rafting with outdoor educational programs to meet the needs of your group. Our Corporate Advantage Discounts, school and scouting discounts make any of our trips affordable. Check out our other website at www.malode.com for more information.

Our self bailing 13 and 14 foot self bailing rafts are ideal for the rivers we run. We provide U.S.Coast Guard approved PFD's (life jackets) for each person and have wet suits and spray jackets available for those cool spring trips. Our clean, trouble free shuttle vehicles are driven by professionally trained and properly licenced drivers and meet PUC, DMV, and CHP requirements assuring you of a comfortable ride to or from the put in and take out. We are particularly pleased with our camp grounds at Mother Lode River Center in Coloma, with over 1/3 of a mile of river front and large dining pavilion that will add to your overnight camping enjoyment.
