The Grand Canyon River Outfitters

A Rich and colorful History in the Great Western Tradition

The Grand Canyon’s river outfitters provide the public with safe access to one of the most unique and truly special backcountry river experiences available anywhere on Earth. Our ranks include many of the original river outfitting families who, decades ago, first pioneered what today is recognized as the sport of recreational river running. This is a rich and proud heritage in America’s great western tradition.

The Grand Canyon river experience is compelling and precious, yet highly individualistic. Our role is to provide a diverse means by which the American and international traveling publics can interact with the canyon and the river on deep and personal terms. No one goes away untouched. Even the unsuspecting are forever changed by the canyon’s sublime beauty, the river’s song, and the self-discovery that comes from new experiences in powerful places.

It’s the goal of each outfitter to interact responsibly with the Grand Canyon at all times. Years of work have produced numerous resource protection strategies now employed on an everyday basis. We take our partnership with the National Park Service very seriously and we’re proud of our contribution. Through the professional services we provide, the National Park Service’s dual mission of providing public access to the Grand Canyon river experience while protecting the resource for future generations is fully realized.

In 1938 a young adventurer named Norman Nevills led the first paying passengers down the Colorado through Grand Canyon, establishing river-running as an adventure vacation and himself as a renowned whitewater boatman. After Norm and Doris Nevills were killed in a 1949 plane crash, Norm's protégé Frank Wright carried on, renaming the company Mexican Hat Expeditions for the little southeastern Utah settlement where the Nevills had lived. In 1957 the present owner, Gaylord Staveley, acquired the company, and in 1970 incorporated it as Canyoneers, Inc.

Many years ago, one of our guests wrote: "traveling with Canyoneers is like traveling with friends." We have always tried to make it so. We invite you to browse our web pages, and to obtain our free full-color catalog. We can be reached by mail, e-mail, 24-hour fax, or telephone.

David and Vicki Mackay met on a Grand Canyon river trip in 1968. As their relationship grew, so did their desire to make river running a permanent part of their lives. In 1971, they founded Colorado River & Trail Expeditions. "We included the word, ‘trail’ in our company name," explains Vicki, " because we wanted to emphasize off-river hiking and exploration in conjunction with the river trips." Today, the Mackay's are still actively involved in the day-to-day management and operation of their company . . . and off-river hiking is still a big part of every river trip!

If you appreciate personal service, attention to detail, old-fashioned friendliness, and the extra time for off-river hiking, you will enjoy rafting with Colorado River & Trail Expeditions. We’re a small company that is big on professionalism and quality. We love what we do, and we consider it a privilege to be able to share this "Grand Experience" with others.

Dory, Oar & Kayak Support – 5 to 19 days

Nearly 30 years ago – when most western rivers were relatively untouched, and only a handful of people had ever journeyed through the Grand Canyon by boat – the writer, conservationist, and pioneer boatman Martin Litton founded Grand Canyon Dories. With the belief that spectacular places like the Grand Canyon deserved to be explored in an extraordinary way, he built a company that devoted a little more time and a lot more attention to each river trip. Martin hired well-educated guides who truly loved the rivers and their history, and renounced the inflatable raft for a different kind of river running vessel: the dory. Today, Grand Canyon Dories is one of the most highly regarded outfitters in the Canyon.

Why a dory? It’s a beautifully handcrafted wooden boat – a work of art as much as a river vessel. But the dory is not just a joy to behold; it’s also a joy to ride. During tranquil stretches, the ride is so soothing the dory has been called a "floating lounge chair." But in whitewater, it becomes a thrilling and bold roller coaster – rocketing off every crest, and then firmly landing in an explosion of glistening spray. Seasoned river runners will tell you that the dory is the only way to go.

To many, the most thrilling event on a Grand Canyon voyage is riding the rapids. But no less thrilling are the many opportunities to explore the other wonders of the Canyon…to play in the pools and waterfalls of the warm tributary streams; to walk the winding, endlessly varied side canyons; to sit in the shade of a tamarisk tree and watch the river swirl past. Life on the river is pleasant. Days of exciting rapids, exploration, and sleeping under the stars will seem to pass much too quickly!

We look forward to each trip as an opportunity to share with our guests the enormous depth and beauty of the Grand Canyon, and as the beginning of new friendships. As you travel through the Canyon with us we hope that you will find…as we have on every expedition…that new values and new dimensions have been added to your life.

"History" and "tradition" are words that have different meanings to different people. To us, they are important words that represent much of what we stand for at Hatch River Expeditions. The Hatch name has been synonymous with river running since the late 1920’s. Bus Hatch, the founder of Hatch River Expeditions, introduced a new breed of outdoor adventure vacations and was the pioneer of the commercial river running industry. Over sixty years, three generations and half a million customers later, the Hatch family is still upholding Bus’s tradition of offering the finest whitewater river running experiences.

Today, the third generation of river running Hatches are carrying on the traditions of the early "Hatch boys" with state-of-the-art equipment, delicious, freshly prepared meals, an experienced, professional and friendly staff, plus a commitment to the service and safety of our guests. We have a great love of river running and the outdoors. Whether you're looking for adventure, scenery, solitude or just plain fun, our trips offer it all. When it’s time for you to choose a guide service for your river running vacation, remember the Hatch tradition of experience and quality. See you on the river!

Motor, Oar, Paddle & Kayak Support – 6 to 14 days

As kids growing up in Safford, Arizona, we played in the desert along the banks of the Gila River. Dad was a professional Scouter working for the Boy Scouts of America. He and his colleague, Mac Ellingson, always looking for "boy building" activities, hit upon float trips on the Colorado River through what was then Glen Canyon. They contacted and hired a couple of local guides named Kent Frost and Bert Loper to guide them from Hite, Utah to Lees Ferry, Arizona. Dad and Mac (or "Moki Mac" as he came to be known) continued running the trips every summer, expanding to other rivers each year. We "Quist kids" were included as time progressed. So, here we are today, still running the rivers. We were incredible lucky to have had those past experiences and consider it a privilege to be in a position today to introduce others to "our" wonderful rivers.

We offer trips on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. This 280-mile trip is offered as a fourteen-day oar powered trip or an eight-day motorized run. Six or nine-day options are available for the oar-powered trip. Over the years, we have explored every nook and side canyon of the Green River's Desolation and Gray canyons, Stillwater and Labyrinth canyons, and the Colorado River's Cataract, Westwater and Grand Canyons. These river canyons are like a second home to us. Check out our varied schedule of trips, and join us for an unforgettable Moki Mac river vacation.

Today, they’re one of the world’s most experienced and respected rafting companies, offering more trips in more locations than any other river outfitter. O.A.R.S.’ wide selection of itineraries on over 20 western rivers features trips for all ages and experience levels – even children as young as four – and includes special programs for families, businesses, groups, and more.

One quality that sets O.A.R.S. apart from other rafting companies is the personal attention that you’ll receive on every trip. O.A.R.S.’ guest to guide ratio is the lowest in the rafting industry: 4:1 on multi-day trips, 6:1 on one-day trips. This low ratio allows your guides to focus on your specific questions and interests, giving you a personalized and in-depth experience.

The year 2000 marked the 31st year that Tour West has been providing whitewater rafting trips throughout the West. While many things have changed in the river running business, our philosophy has remained the same. A river trip is more than a vacation; it is an experience! Very few people go on a river trip and come back unchanged. We feel fortunate to be able to be a part of that experience.

Tour West is a family-owned business. The founder, Frank Stratton, was a school teacher and farmer before he became involved in the river industry. His friend invited him to come on a raft trip through the Grand Canyon and the rest is history. They organized a company and began providing rafting trips to the public. Our trips follow strict adherence to the operating requirements established by Grand Canyon National Park, interpretation of the human and natural history of the canyon, operating safely, protecting the environment, keeping abreast of changes in the industry, and using state of the art equipment. We feel it is our duty to hire the best personnel available so that our customers are treated in a courteous, respectful, and dignified manner.
